Thomas Rhett Wonders What Could Have Been In “Marry Me”

Thomas Rhett has been flying sky high with his love songs written for and sung to his wife Lauren, but the third single off his third studio album LIFE CHANGES takes a bit of a different direction. “Marry Me”, released via Valory Music Group, has everything to do with courtship and love, but it’s not for his wife.  The tune takes a more somber turn towards falling in love, then watching that love you once had marry someone else.

“Marry Me”, co-written by Rhett, Jesse Frasure, Ashley Gorley, and Shane McAnally, takes a twist on the words “marry me” and turns it into a painful look back on a childhood crush turned adult romance, to present day where the man is watching his love marry someone else.  Rhett’s delivery is raw, showcasing every vulnerability as he traipsed through his life from childhood and beyond with the love of his life, a love he once had and wishing he still did.

Tender piano plays in the intro and throughout the song, while the melancholy tone of Rhett’s voice leads listeners into the memories of a man and his love. In the beginning, it seems he’s singing about their wedding:

She wants to get married, she wants it perfect
she wants her granddaddy preach the service…

The chorus then details the bride is a past lover and he’s watching his true love marry someone else:

I’ll wear my black suit, black tie, hide out in the back
I’ll do a strong shot of whiskey straight out the flask
I’ll try to make it through without cryin’
So nobody sees
Yeah, she wanna get married
But she don’t wanna marry me

It may be a stray from his endearing love songs, but with the creative writing and Rhett’s vocals it’s certain to become another fan favorite.  Check out the video below.
