Maddie & Tae Address Bullying With Their Wit and Sass In New Single “Sierra”

The remarkable duo of Maddie & Tae stay true to their talents in part because they are not influenced by trends, and in doing so, the messages in their songs are genuine and from the heart. Their newest single “Sierra” is no different, tackling the topic of bullying – an issue that’s so upfront in today’s culture – and they do it in their witty M&T style.

Based on real-life experiences that Maddie Marlow dealt with in high school, “Sierra” talks about a female classmate who was so conceited that she bullied and walked over those around her (including Marlow), without a thought of consequence. But what goes around comes around, and karma always gets her girl.  You can tell by the lyrics that this was a “let go, move on” song for Marlow, a vessel to get out the words that she wanted to say, possibly face to face:

Sierra, Sierra
Girl, let me tell ya
One day you might need those friends that you ditched
Sierra, Sierra
Life ain’t all tiaras
You’re gonna find out that karma’s a…

The song is brutally honest about her feelings towards her nemesis, and while Marlow might have been a victim of bullying then, it is not a victim that is portrayed in this song. She stands her ground, and is able to shrug her archenemy off (To tell the truth I ain’t even mad / ‘Cause I know the universe is gonna get you back / All I have to do is bide my time).

In addition to the witty lyrics, the harmonies of M&T are perfect. Their vocals, twang and sass along with steel guitar and fiddle give it that classic country sound, adding to the character of the song.

Even though the song was written by a teenager about a teenager, the lyrics are universal and timeless. People of all ages and situations (school, work, etc.) can relate to this song, again showing the level of songwriting talent and maturity by these young ladies (“Sierra” was written by Marlow, Taylor Dye and Aaron Scherz).

“Sierra” hits country radio on May 16 and can be found on Maddie & Tae’s debut album Start Here, available on all outlets.
