The Short Film Chronicles His Health Struggles That Almost Silenced the Singer
and the Death of His Nephew & Crew Member

On Wednesday (6/12), Wade Bowen released “Inconsistent Chaos,” a documentary short film about mental health. In a conversation with MusiCares, Bowen chronicles his struggles with vocal chord issues that left him unsure if he would be able to sing again and the death of his nephew and crew member Chase Everett Cavender, who died by suicide on Father’s Day 2018.

The documentary details Bowen’s hemhorraged vocal chords which resulted in a surgery and months of recovery that took a massive toll on the singer’s mental health. While in the process of tending to his health issues, Bowen’s nephew and crew member Chase, who was the band’s stage manager and monitor engineer, died by suicide while the band was on tour.

When asked why he wanted to make this documentary, Bowen explained, “For one, to let my fans and followers know that I had recovered. I think that was a major concern for many. We tried to keep it somewhat quiet during the process, so we didn’t alarm people. Additionally, although painted on a somewhat unique canvas, my problems were/are far from unique. Fear and depression affect us all no matter what the cause. Because I’ve got a platform enabling me to speak louder than most, I wanted to be sure the world could hear that it’s ok, there is help. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to seek it. Tell a friend, a family member, a loved one that you need help – it doesn’t make you weak or less cool.”

Recently, Bowen released his album Solid Ground on vinyl for the first time. Upon its release, Rolling Stone called Solid Ground “…a love letter to his home state of Texas and his most musically ambitious set of songs in a career that stretches back two decades.” Sounds Like Nashville called it, “A versatile album that blends many sonic flavors and influences seamlessly, Bowen’s Solid Ground continues to enhance the singer’s lengthy catalog all while paying tribute to his deep Texas roots.”
