When Nashville-based country singer Bobby Watson begins his new single with the true-to-life verse “Been through a tornado, got through it ok,” you know he has a steadfast view of the world not to mention an unwavering optimism .  On his new single “Hurt Like You,” Watson, with his resonant and richly soulful voice, sings of a love and loss that’s turned everything upside down, yet conveys a worldly wisdom that everything will turn out just fine. The song written by John Milstead and Tim Kelly and produced by award-winning producer Jason Kyle Saetveit, also features Derek Wells on electric guitar, Patrick McGrath on acoustic guitar, Richard Brinsfield on bass, Alex Wright on keyboards and Evan Hutchings on drums.  “Hurt Like You” releases digitally April 2.

Says Watson: “With all the craziness that’s been going on in the world over the past year, I was looking for a song about people not taking things too seriously and just making the most of it no matter how life was going. ‘Hurt Like You’ is all about going through something terrible, but it delivers the story in a fun lighthearted way that has you feeling like everything is going to be ok.”

Bobby Watson’s path to Nashville has been winding and unconventional. He’s lived a half dozen lives in as many places and the one thread that connected everything was music. His music is a reflection of his global playlist and lifelong passion for singing. The music showcases Watson’s considerable depth as a performer, while focusing on earnest lyrics and a soulful delivery that is attracting a faithful audience.

Watson was born in Sarasota, Fla. His father was in the U.S. Navy and the family moved a lot as he was growing up before the family settled in Flagler Beach, Fla. His mother was a singer at heart and wherever they went she would encourage her son to perform.

Following graduation, Watson went to Florida State University in Tallahassee. He was studying engineering, but music wasn’t far away from his thoughts. During a school break he went home and recorded a few songs in his family’s home studio. After he went back to class, his mother copied the songs on CDs and started sending them to record labels in Nashville. “It wasn’t like she knew anyone and there is zero explanation for what happened, but she came across a small record label and they gave me a call,” Watson recalls.

The little label that responded was Bandit Records which was owned by country legend George Jones and industry veterans Evelyn Shriver and Susan Nadler. Having worked with scores of country superstars, it was unusual for them to listen to unsolicited material but on a slow day they decided to. Blown away by Bobby’s voice, they called his mom and expressed interest in hearing more.

Watson dropped out of school, borrowed the family camper, and moved into a campground near Nashville. He started recording with award-winning producer Kyle Lehning (Randy Travis, George Jones, Restless Heart).

After meeting his wife Paula, he decided to go back to school and complete his degree. What followed was a winding career search that led him from the Republic of Panama, to Australia and London where he interned for a Member of British Parliament. Along the way, he picked up a travel guitar, but singing was something he did to unwind at night, not for an audience.

It wasn’t long before music called him back to Nashville and Watson reconnected with music industry veteran Michael Campbell, who was an early believer. Campbell invited Watson back to Music City, introduced him to producer Jason Kyle Saetveit, and booked a studio. The sound they created was appealing, warm, and an ideal showcase for Watson’s rich, blues-tinged vocals and seamless transitions between musical styles.
