Nashville, Tennessee – Gretchen Wilson signed Jessie G to her Redneck Records label for the Oregon native’s grit, heart and tenacity, and her four-song self-titled EP was released today, Friday, June 28.
“I can’t wait to share this new music with the world,” said Jessie. “I poured my heart and soul into every line of every song. I couldn’t have had a better producer on this album. Gretchen took it all to the next level, and she pushed me past what I thought my limits were. I grew so much through this process.”
Produced by Gretchen, Jessie co-wrote all of the songs with the likes of Rob Hatch, Davis Branch, Cathy Majeski, Sarah Beth Terry, Justin Biltonen, Melanie Meriney, Christian Santangelo and Gretchen. “Blue Collar Bayou” is the most autobiographical of the four songs, making reference to Jessie’s commercial fishing background. “Fire Work” tells of two reckless hearts bound to end in ashes, but they “make fire work.” A bad relationship faces the inevitable in “What Are We Waiting For.” “Whatever This Is” revels in finding the perfect match.
“Jessie G has something that you don’t see very often…the kind of grit that shows you what the next generation of real women in Country music looks and sounds like,” said Gretchen.
Jessie’s first introduction to her future producer and label head came after winning a battle of the bands, in which the first prize was opening Gretchen’s Portland, Oregon tour date. After catching her set, Gretchen invited Jessie onto her tour bus to chat and learn more about this woman who reminded her so much of herself.
“Sometimes true musical talent just cannot be denied, even when it’s found in the sleepy fishing town of Brookings, Oregon,”said Gretchen, who challenged Jessie on virtually every aspect of her career including songwriting, touring and performing.
With a heritage that spans across four generations of commercial fishermen, if there’s one thing Jessie knows, it’s hard work. She spent much of her childhood aboard the hand-built family boat, searching for Dungeness crab and albacore tuna and then selling their catch at the market.
Jessie saved the money she earned on the docks to take the leap of faith and make the move to Nashville. She immersed herself fully into writing, teaming with some of Nashville’s best, and spent countless hours in the studio working on her sound. Discovering the true art of songwriting under the watchful eye of Gretchen and her multi-talented friends and collaborators, Jessie realized the true depth of what she wanted to say.
“Finding my voice through these new songs in the writing room and in the studio has been both fulfilling and inspirational,”said Jessie. She’s been fulfilling another dream of touring by playing the new songs as an opening act for Gretchen or as a featured artist during Gretchen’s set.
Jessie G’s EP will preface a full album release, coming in the Fall.
