Rivers & Roads, the long-awaited EP from Smashing Pumpkin’s touring musician and recording artist Katie Cole, is now available.
Another collaboration with producer/mixer Howard Willing and the endeavors of her 2021/2022 Kickstarter campaign Rivers & Roads features stellar Nashville musicians and tells a bigger story of her journey. The never-before-heard “Young and Stupid” shines as the album’s full band closing track with 70’s-inspired guitar and piano layers.
“2021… we were still in the heart of the pandemic, so I focused heavily on writing, recording and live-streaming,” shares Cole about the EP’s creation. “By the time we hit 2022 I was pulled into the most ambitious Smashing Pumpkins project to date called ATUM.”
Aside from writing and recording her own brand of Americana-fused music, Cole is also a touring musician with the Smashing Pumpkins, who just released their latest album in May. The 33-song offering called ATUM – A Rock Opera in 3 acts, features vocals from Cole and she also racks up a second credit as BGV arranger for the project.
“It was the end of 2021 and I was talking with Billy Corgan about the new project,” explains Cole. “I had previous created BGV arrangements for the 2020 release CYR. That was 20 songs, but this was 33…. So I just dove head first into it. This time around it was less stressful as I knew Billy and the band would know I was going to give it everything I had. By January of 2022 we were recording. It was an enormous undertaking.”
After returning from Mexico and Australia, Cole will be playing some local Nashville shows in June and July, then hitting the road again with the Smashing Pumpkins for the World is a Vampire tour with Interpol, Stone Temple Pilots and Rival Sons.
