Gary Morris Tells The Love Story Of A Soldier And A Small Town Girl With Emotional Title Track “Sense of Pride”

“Sense of Pride,” the title track of renowned singer, songwriter and Broadway actor Gary Morris’ thirteenth career release, is a gripping track that Morris wrote about his father World War II veteran Master Sgt. Stanley Morris. The song is the true story of his mother and father’s love and how the couple coped with his father’s time served over seas.

Veterans have always held a special place in Morris’ heart. Over the years, he has opened his Colorado ranch to various veteran’s groups, such as Healing Waters. “Being with the veterans, those people who have served our country, is always inspiring,” says Morris. When reflecting on the writing process for “Sense of Pride,” Morris commented that the title track is very autobiographical. “My father was a decorated World War II veteran,” he said, “I wrote and dedicated this song to him and all those who serve.”

As a whole, “Sense of Pride” is the most personal project that Morris has released. The album is full of touching tracks about personal moments told from Morris’ own perspectives. “It was cathartic,” Morris said when asked about the personal nature of the project. “While working on this project the boundaries that I had were removed. It was just music for music,” he continued.

Gary Morris’ album “Sense of Pride” is currently available on Apple MusiciTunesGoogle PlayAmazon and Spotify.

“Sense of Pride” by Gary Morris

Behind an old oak door
In a seldom opened drawer
Was a faded ribbon and a shining star

There was a sense of pride
On my daddy’s side
That he went away to war.
Laying wire in front of Patton’s fire
In 1944.
He was a Texas boy
Every mother’s joy
But he didn’t know the cost
That every soldier pays

Behind an old oak door
In a seldom opened drawer
Was a faded ribbon and a shining star

She was a southern girl
And she was his world.
Leaving her, he left his only joy
Will she be waiting there
Will she know or care
Will she recognize the man who left a boy

Behind an old oak door
In a seldom opened drawer
Was a faded ribbon and a shining star

He never talked about it
But he thought about it
He was a product of his time
It’s what they did back then
Soldiers fought soldiers died
Families weep
Widows cry
Headline news All wars are lost
Who decides the price the cost

Behind an old oak door
In a seldom open drawer
Was a faded ribbon and a shining star
Underneath a note
What daddy thought
He wrote
I underlined in red
Every word my daddy said
WE MUST LEARN TO BE KIND
BEFORE WERE OUT OF TIME
