Austin, TX – About two months into Calder Allen’s time at the University of Montana in Missoula, the fifth-generation Texan and avid fly angler packed up and headed home to Austin to give it a go pursuing music full-time, leaving Montana’s healthy trout population for bass, coastal redfish, and a musical community most could only dream of. After writing a fresh batch of songs back in Austin, Allen approached his family friend, Charlie Sexton, for a listen. Sexton agreed to produce Allen’s first album, connecting a huge circle for the both of them. The first time Allen was in a recording studio, it was at Arlyn Studios to watch his grandfather, Terry Allen, record his album Moby Dick, which Sexton was producing. Sexton became an integral part of Allen’s budding career, producing his first two albums, the second of which, a new eleven-song LP called Dreamers, Drifters and Hiders, will be released on May 3rd.

Today, Allen announced Dreamers, Drifters and Hiders with the release of the album’s first single, “Floating Shoes.” Beginning with a lo-fi drum loop and a brooding chord structure, “Floating Shoes” may not sound like what listeners were first expecting, but by the end of the four-and-a-half-minute song, Allen’s deep roots in both Texas and its musical legacy bubble up in a dark, rowdy sonic journey. “I just want to create with intent. I want my songs to be pure, honest, and representative of who I am, what I believe, and what I would like the world to be,” Allen says he is always carrying a line from one of his grandpa’s songs in the back of his head: “My ego ain’t my amigo.” “Put it out there and let it live,” Allen adds.

Yesterday, Holler. premiered the new single writing, “Like an oddly disquieting fever-dream, the song twists and writhes away as a squawking fiddle and an acoustic guitar jangle around Calder Allen’s brooding drawl.” Today, fans can stream or purchase “Floating Shoes” at this link and pre-order or pre-save Dreamers, Drifters and Hiders ahead of its May release right here.

Allen has also announced a very special hometown show to celebrate the album’s release on May 4th at 3Ten Austin City Limits. The following week he’ll hit the road supporting Charles Wesley Godwin, then opening for Miranda Lambert and Red Clay Strays, before jumping on tour with Cody Jinks in the late summer and fall.
