Sister Hazel Brings the Waterworks in New EP, “Water”

Water: n. A colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid that forms the seas, lakes,
rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms.
Water: The title of the first EP as part of the “Element Series” from Florida hit makers Sister Hazel!

Quality lyrics. Delicate subject matter. Well executed harmonies. Sing along rhythms. Clap along beats. Strong musicianship and even stronger friendships. Everything we have come to know and love from Sister Hazel over the last twenty years since “All For You” propelled the tight knit group to the national spotlight in 1997.

They’ve grown a lot since then. The five-some has added family members, added charities (Lyrics for Life), added a rock boat cruise (which just celebrated its 18th run by the way.) And with the continuation of life personally and professionally comes challenge, struggle, heartbreak, triumph, forgiveness, and the urge to press on, no matter the circumstances. Sister Hazel is no stranger to any of that and that’s why this new music is so relevant, no matter your age, status, or even music preference. The country/rock/indie group proves that good music is timeless and honesty and vulnerability are the keys to sustainability. From the gut wrenching, real life based confessions of “You Won’t See Me Again” to the drive down with the top down feel of the new single, “I Stayed For The Girl”. . . Water proves why it’s the key component of all living things. You might be crying tears. You might be driving to the beach blaring this soundtrack. Hell, you might be doing both at the same time and we would not fault you in the least. And if you listen to “More Than I Want Too” four or five times in a row, we are only here to say “we told you so.”

And, as if the first six songs aren’t memorable enough to be on repeat, there’s a bonus seventh track! When The Country Note interviewed the spunky and down to earth guys, we discovered the story behind the song. . .the very short song. . .as in a minute long song. The musical geniuses decided to create a band challenge. The challenge you ask? Write a one minute song that will eventually connect with the other one minute songs from the subsequent Element EPs to perhaps form a different project all together at the very end. While sixty seconds is impossible for most writers, front man Ken Block had a place called Abilene on his mind. Now that our curiosity is peaked, it’s too bad that we have to wait for the rest of the EPs to find out what happened to the girl from Abilene. But in the meantime, we’re going to play this one over and over, just like we have been since it came out February 9th!

We caught up with Sister Hazel right before the album dropped, as they were prepping for their January 26th Grand Ole Opry debut and their annual “Rock Boat Cruise” right after with the “Hazelnuts”. Yes. . . their fans have named themselves the Hazelnuts, which the guys jokingly said perfectly suits them because they’re crazy in the best way possible! But don’t these guys fool you. They’re crazy in their own right! Check out the full interview here. And check out sisterhazel.com for complete tour dates and other info!
