Josh Turner’s ‘I Serve A Savior’ Is A Beautiful Homage To His Faith

The distinctive baritone voice of Josh Turner is ever more present on his new gospel album, I Serve A Savior. Mixing Turner’s rich, full-bodied voice with great gospel hymns is truly heavenly, pun intended, as each note is carried through the air with a light touch first on your ears then on your heart. A vocal love story, the album tells of the love our Savior has for us and the love we should show him by sharing it with others through classic gospel songs and a couple of Turner’s own.

The track list seems to follow a path of what life would be as you follow a Savior; the very first cut, “I Saw The Light” featuring Sonya Isaacs, is a look into how his faith first took hold of his life while the album ends with Turner’s own “Me And God,” a song that showcases the challenges of life and how your faith can tackle them. Turner’s take on some of the classic songs incorporates an eclectic steel guitar, drums and upbeat rhythms, especially on “Amazing Grace,” pleasing the musical pallet as you tap your foot along to the beat.

A new song on the album, “The River (of Happiness)” was written by his wife Jennifer along with their eldest son Hampton and features the whole family singing together. Reminiscent of an old time gospel singing, it’s inspiring to hear all the boys sing with their father and mother.

Turner has a way with gospel feeling songs even on his most acclaimed albums, so for him to put out a full length gospel album isn’t a stretch. His faith is known by all who know anything about him. Faith and family are what drive him to be the best person, artist, husband, father and son he can be.  All of these attributes shine through on this newest addition to his collective work.

In addition to the album release, the 12-tracks were recorded live at Gaither Studios as well as an interview hosted by gospel legend Bill Gaither for a DVD special. “It was such an honor and a pleasure to work alongside Bill on this project,” stated Turner in a press release. “Josh Turner is a gifted artist. We talked about his faith, his music, his wife and children, and about his gospel heritage he holds so dear,” said Gaither. “It is a joy to see a young man with so much talent using his gifts with purpose and excellence.”

Each song on this album holds a special place for Turner. Most are memories from growing up and attending Union Baptist Church in South Carolina. Turner says that “The bible tells us to go out into the world and share the gospel” and he hopes to do that through this album.
