Clay Parker and Jodi James Channel Woodie Guthrie in ‘The Lonesomest Sound That Can Sound’

Acoustic duo Clay Parker and Jodi James hail from Baton Rouge, Louisiana where they gained their footing in the marshy bayous, carving a niche as traditional singer songwriters in the deep roots of the Folk and Americana tree. Clay and Jodi would model a life off of the late Woodie Guthrie’s unique demeanor, specifically his melancholy, almost haunting, performance of When The Curfew Blows– “Was the lonesomest sound, boys / that ever heard sound, boys / like the midnight wind, boy / when the curfew blows.” Following in the ways of Guthrie while keeping at heart Louisiana traditions, the duo have followed the original paths of Southern music, creating a way of life touched upon by traditional Americana.

Inspired by Guthrie’s lyrics, their latest album The Lonesomest Sound That Can Sound, released on July 20, is the product of many miles, lots of encouragement from friends, and a creative union whose existence was always inevitable.

The 10 tracks on the album are written by the duo and includes an easy mix of folk, blues, country and Americana.  Jodi’s vocals are a soft and subtle, yet help create perfect pictures, something only a natural storyteller can do. Clay’s sound has a deep meaningful essence to it.  With an almost breathy harmony tone, their voices create an earthy and organic sound.

Each song, although different in instrumentation, flow easily from the first track to the last.  The Lonesomest Sound That Can Sound is masterfully crafted with an array of instruments from steel, acoustic guitars, drums, and even an organ.
