Since breaking onto the country scene in 2017, Seth Ennis has written for some of the genres biggest stars including Tyler Farr, Chase Rice, Lauren Alaina, Matt Stell, and Dylan Scott’s single “Hooked” that scored at #2 spot on the charts, released his incredible debut single “Woke Up In Nashville” and his 2019 collaboration with Little Big Town “Call Your Mama.” Just as his career was hitting it into high gear, Seth made a decision to step away to refocus and reenergize. Now he’s back at it on all cylinders with three singles so far in 2021: “I Still Do” released in April. “U-Turn” in June and his latest “The Book” available today. Listen here.
We recently caught up with Seth to talk about his renewal in life and art, his new single and more.
CN: We’d like to start by saying Welcome Back! For our readers who may not be familiar, can you share what led you to your hiatus and what has brought you back?
SE: Appreciate ya’ll having me! When I moved to Nashville a lot of things really happened all of the sudden and I didn’t really get a chance to take a breath so I think I just needed to take some time to reevaluate and focus on who I was a creator. I feel good now!
CN: During the time you took for yourself, a pandemic happened. In what ways did the world taking a pause help or affect your internal discovery?
SE: It was kind of a blessing in disguise for me personally. It allowed me to take a step back from the circus and pin point exactly what I wanted to say and also gave me time to rest for a second… which I’ll admit, I’m not really good at doing, but I know that part of things is super important!
CN: Did quarantine help inspire you to write or do the opposite?
SE: I actually spent pretty much most of my time writing. It was nice to have a moment to step back for myself but also I’m sure for a lot of artist in town. Getting to write for other people is always enjoyable and I’m glad I got to write not only for myself but also for other artists!
CN: Can you take us through your songwriting process?
SE: Honestly, it’s different every time. Most of the time when I write for another artist, I like to have a couple days with them, where I can really get to know them and their story/sound. But when I’m writing for me, I normally get up with my best friends for a night write and bring a couple beers for the session. That always helps take the pressure off!
CN: You released a surprise single on April 1 – “I Still Do” – which received a lot of love from fans right away. How did their reaction to the release make you feel?
SE: It was electric. Honestly, it gave me a lot of confidence in what I’m trying to do and I think having confidence is the most difficult perspective to maintain in music.
CN: On Friday, August 20th you are set to release your next single “The Book.” Straightforward it’s about a breakup but it’s more symbolic about what has happened in your life.
SE: So, it’s a bit weird for me to write a break up song on the surface. I have an amazing wife and a kid on the way that I’m so excited about. But professionally, I was dealing with an industry break up and it felt just like when I used to breakup with ex. I had spent several years devoting time to music and the industry and needed to step back and remind myself exactly what I wanted – which is to make music for the fans. I’m happy to be back at it and feel like this is exactly where I’m meant to be.
CN: Based on the reception of your last single, “The Book” is sure to be another well-received release. What do you personally hope that fans take away from it?
SE: I’ve always wanted to just make music that makes people feel something or remember how they felt about something. That’s what it’s all about to me. This song is very special to me about something I went through that I hope lots of people are able to relate to.
CN: You have collaborated with many artists from Tyler Farr to Eric Paslay, HARDY, Lauren Alaina, Jordan Davis – the list goes on. Is there an artist that you have yet to collaborate with and would jump at the opportunity?
SE: I’m down to clown with anyone that wants to. Always.
CN: Three singles released in four months – is there an EP in the works?
SE: I’m not really sure what the release packaging is going to look like. I just know that I’m loving being able to put out music whenever I want now and it’s going to keep coming consistently.
CN: What’s next on the horizon?
SE: More jams 🙂
