The new acoustic version of “Further Away” and its video, originally recorded on Chaffins’ debut album Some Things Won’t Last released in February, provides an acknowledgement and solace for our confusion, our fears and our hopes as we navigate 2020. The clarity of the acoustic sound brings understanding as minds struggle to make sense of a senseless world. With an unwavering look at personal internal struggle amid uncontrollable outside events, revisiting “Further Away” offers a musical balm that stabilizes moods.

“It was the last song on the record, and it was kind of just there … but then this year happened, and I thought about that song and those lyrics so differently,” Chaffins explains to American Songwriter. “I wanted to do a version of it that just had way more feeling in it and we went in super raw and in a day, we had everything down.”

“Further Away,” written by Chaffins almost a decade ago, becomes an anthem for the confusing journey through 2020. Joined by Brit Taylor, a new Americana sensation on the opening melody, the blend of Chaffins’ baritone with Taylor shines a light on Chaffins’ eastern Kentucky roots and his bluegrass influences. The interplay between the banjo and verbed-out Dobro and the purity of the performance complement the vocals and message of the song.

The acoustic version of “Further Away” was the first song recorded at East Nashville’s new recording studio The Cabin, which was built with sheer determination during the most difficult of times in 2020. Studio owner Matty Alger is featured on drums. Grammy-winning Brandon Bell (Zac Brown Band, Dylan Leblanc, The Highwoman) is defining his new course as co-producer after losing his chief engineer position when Zac Brown’s Southern Ground studio was closed indefinitely as the COVID-19 shutdown began. Chaffins, who is co-producer with Bell, seeks to re-establish his direction after the pandemic closed much of the music industry just weeks after release of his debut solo album.
