“Just five more minutes!”

How many times in our lives have we said those four words to our parents, our friends, our significant others? So simple in their meaning at the time, but now given a completely different one thanks to the brilliance of Scotty McCreery, Frank Rogers and Monty Criswell.  Like many well-written songs, “Five More Minutes” came from emotions resulting from an event in one’s life; in this case McCreery losing his grandfather in January of 2015. The loss of someone close to you puts the length of time you have on this Earth into perspective, and “Five More Minutes” captures that feeling perfectly. The song’s lyrics are about some of McCreery’s key life moments – dating at 16, last high school football game, saying goodbye to his grandfather – moments when he wishes “I had me a pause button” to get five more minutes. And while McCreery’s life is specific to his experiences, they are moments most of us go through, making the song very relatable.

When People premiered the heartfelt music video last month, another universal layer of emotion was added to the lyrics as the home-video recordings allowed the viewer to not only look upon McCreery’s private family moments, but recognize their own family memories within the video.  The footage of McCreery as a baby, childhood video of birthdays and Christmas mornings, and his beloved grandfathers are moments were one could say “I remember doing that with my family.”
