Codie Prevost’s ‘Radio’ Is His Most Personal Album to Date

Since 2011, Codie Prevost has been on a whirlwind of successes and accolades, with four Canadian Country Music Award nominations, including “Album of The Year” for All Kinds of Crazy, “Rising Star”, and “Interactive Artist of The Year” and a whopping twenty-six Saskatchewan Country Music Awards, including “Entertainer of the Year” and “Male Vocalist of the Year”. This past May he released the single “You Won’t Sleep Tonight” and next on deck is Prevost’s fifth studio album Radio. While the public release is set for early 2018, members of The Codie Prevost Diaries currently have access to an exclusive pre-release.

Radio, which consists of eight songs including the lead off single “You Won’t Sleep Tonight”, is said to be the most personal album Prevost has released, representing who he is as an artist and a person. Each of the eight tracks have been cleverly arranged and written and have stayed true to Prevost’s style, yet some just stand out for their essence.  For example, “Take It Out On Me,” is a charming tale of just saying “if your mad at me, just say it. I can handle it”!  Lyrically, this was done in the most amusing way possible, which made for easy listening:

Don’t hang up ’til you feel better
Call me names, use a couple four letters
Speak your piece and speak your mind
And if you gotta just one more time
Just go on take it, go on take it out on me
Baby, cuz baby I can take it if you need to take a break from being so sweet
You go on take it out on me

Another cleverly written song with a great rock edge is Shut It Down” – an amped up end of the work week anthem that every fan can relate to.  The drum beat is steady and guitar riffs are great, while the background vocals and Prevost jam to lights out and long necks:

Flip that switch
Get a little buzz, what you think
Let’s just shut it down and have us a drink
I’ve been racing all week
My tank is on E
I could use a little chilled long neck therapy
I’ve been watchin’ those hands going around that clock
When that ticker hits five, I’ll be ready to rock
Get a little loose if ya know what I mean
Let’s just shut it down and have us a drink

Among the infectious edgy tunes are softer ones that are more poignant and straight to the point.  “In My Book” is a bluesy R & B style tune about trust, respect, and a man’s word.  The background vocals along with Prevost’s higher range give the track a true Motown vibe:

In my Book
You can’t trust a man who won’t raise a can of cold beer with ya in a dive bar now and then
In my Book
You don’t give your word if it ain’t your word
And don’t turn your back on a friend that needs a friend
In my book
You got to break your back to make your cash
Take your hat off when they’re singing to the red and white

The final song is a poignant lyrical treasure titled “Old Clock Radio”.  With an acoustic and steel guitar, the track sets up as like a traditional country song. Prevost pours his soul into the song with strong crisp vocals and the subtle background vocals add depth, but aren’t overpowering in this remembrance to youth and family that’s long gone:

I want to get lost in the static
Let these memories just come pouring through
Close my eyes, feel the magic that fills my soul when you do what you do
No one takes me back like you do
Old Clock Radio if you don’t mind
Could you play our song just one more time
Cuz it sure is lonely laying here tonight
It’s the only way I feel her by my side
So, Old Clock Radio if you don’t mind
