Canaan Cox Is Ready To Impact Country Radio With Debut Single “Lie”

If you don’t know who Canaan Cox is, then consider this your heads up – because once his debut single “Lie” is released on Friday (8/4), chances are you’ll be hearing his name everywhere.

Penned exclusively by Cox and co-produced by Matt McClure, “Lie” was written from – and sort of during – a personal argument Cox had with an ex-girlfriend:

“They say all good songs come from true stories and I hope this makes the list,” Cox said in a press release. “Writing this song came to me, literally, as it was happening. In the middle of the fight that ended my last relationship, I asked her if she still loved me and before she answered, I told her I her I didn’t want to know. Soon as I said that, I grabbed a pen, paper, and wrote down, ‘If you don’t love me, lie.’ She didn’t find it funny but I’m so thankful for the argument. This song is full of truth with little gems hidden within the story.”

Relatable lyrics plea his case as his relationship falls apart, while Cox shows off his impressive vocal runs. The infections rhythm of the chorus stays in your head:

I’ll take the heartache, you’re leaving us behind
I’ll be the mistake that you made one too many nights
I’ll take the hurt, I’ll take the burn
I’ll take the lesson to be learned
I’ll be alright, just say goodbye
But if you don’t love me … lie

Even though the catchy uptempo, genre-crossing single places Cox in the same company as the likes of Thomas Rhett and Chris Lane, his vocal range and style (i.e. intricate acoustic guitar) puts him in a category all his own.

“Lie” is a perfect fit for country radio, and should provide Cox an impressive breakthrough with his debut single.
